The Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka made the Decision on Temporary Organization of Operations of the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka in compliance with the prevailing measures instituted pursuant to the declaration of the COVID-19 epidemic.
The Museum has joined the campaign launched by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the Croatian Tourism Board, and obtained the “Safe Stay in Croatia” designation, which highlights it as a museum in which all health and safety protocols are enforced during the COVID-19 pandemic, making it a safe and desirable destination. Thanks to the “Safe Stay in Croatia” designation, the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka and its remote locations, the Kastav Regional Museum Collection and the Lipa Remembers Memorial Centre are safe places to visit.
The Museum is also a partner with the Central State Demography and Youth Office of the Republic of Croatia in the IT programme e-Dječja kartica (children’s e-card) and the mobile app Mudrica, which includes features for both parents and children when they visit the Museum. The app is free of charge, and it offers many benefits, such as free admission for children from a single family when the parents purchase tickets, a single admission pass for all three museum locations, free admission for parents whose children are participating in workshops and a 50% discount on children’s publications.

The exhibition “Rijeka Roots, or How to Become a Citizen of Rijeka” will present diplomas from the inventory of the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka and the State Archives in Rijeka that were issued by the Rijeka City Council from the 17th to 19th centuries. These diplomas conferred citizenship to persons born in Rijeka or to those who settled in Rijeka and earned citizenship through their works, contributions to the city and its citizens or by virtue of their wealth.

As part of the programme to mark the 350th anniversary of the execution of Peter Zrinski and Fran Krsto Frankopan in Wiener Neustadt in 1671, the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka is opening an exhibition, both physical and virtual, “The Frankopan Towns and Fortifications in the Territory of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County on Historical Photographs and Postcards.”
The Frankopani (Frankapani), as one of the most notable and oldest Croatian noble families, left behind much evidence of their activities, both movable and fixed cultural treasures. The most visible vestiges of their authority are the many castles and fortifications that they had constructed.

The exhibition observes the 150th anniversary of the birth of Dr Franjo Kresnik (1869-1943), one of the greatest Cremonese lutherie experts of his time. Kresnik dedicated over 40 years to the study of bowed string instruments, particularly those made in the workshops of Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù.
A film was shot to accompany the exhibition “Violins Beyond Borders/Stradivari in Rijeka – Kresnik and Cremona.” Antonio Stradivari, Guiseppe Guarneri del Gesù and Franjo Kresnik have left behind instruments which are admired to this day, while generations have enjoyed the music that they make. This is why we are calling on everyone to enjoy the music and this film that recalls our great fellow citizen.

The exhibition opened on 12 September 2019 to mark the one-hundredth anniversary of D’Annunzio’s occupation of Rijeka. The exhibition was set up as part of the permanent display on the first floor of the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka. It portrays the sixteen months of the dictatorship established in Rijeka by Gabriele D’Annunzio, the Italian poet, soldier and nationalist, through the prism of women – in both the figurative and literal senses, through a cross-section of specific historical events and testimony and by presenting several works by Italian futurists which reflect the spirit of this era.

MOUNTAIN OF CULTURE
The Mountain of Culture encompasses a fascinating and diverse programme that links cultural institutions with the private sector active in the field of culture. All of them are stakeholders and creators of cultural events in their community, dedicated to creating content for our citizens inside the urban space of downtown Rijeka. The aim is to connect people of all ages to the content offered by museums, but also to song and dance, involving institutions situated in our immediate vicinity that nurture the same values and aspirations. The programme has been conceived so that it spatially and thematically links parts of Rijeka in which the creators of cultural life are active within the micro-space of the city’s green belt, where the Museum and neighbouring institutions reside. By forming a programme inside the city’s green oasis and connecting and joining with others, the Museum wants to activate the space around it and attract even more visitors by providing them with desirable content. As part of this programme, the Museum wants to organize free guided tours, workshops, lectures and other activities inside the Museum and in its surrounding gardens. The zone encompassed by the programme is defined as a green belt at the Museum’s coordinates. Through a common programme and collaboration, we are contributing to a more lively perception of culture and its importance in defining the city’s individual urban zones. The first years of implementation, marked by the pandemic, have unfortunately entailed limitation of the programme’s previously conceived scope in terms of both the number of creators and amount of content, so this year, besides the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka, participants include the State Archives in Rijeka, the Rijeka Natural History Museum, the Croatian Cultural Hall, the Poneštrica Gallery and the PEEK & POKE Museum.

Humanity’s eternal need to shape materials found in nature is the origin of the manufacture of items without which we could not imagine everyday life today. One of the oldest human skills and the first one that humans used to deliberately and permanently alter the properties of a material is the crafting of ceramic, which is why ceramics have such a vital role in engendering an understanding of ways of life, degrees of development and cultural achievements from prehistory to the present. The desire to present yet another rich and valuable, and thus far unpublished, museum collection is precisely why the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka is presenting this catalogue named after an exceptionally popular exhibition, “Our Daily Ceramic,” at which over four hundred functional and decorative items made of various types of ceramic (maiolica, faïence, stoneware, earthenware, porcelain and terracotta) were on display.
Margita Cvijetinović, who authored both the catalogue and the exhibition, accorded attention to the historical, cultural, typological and artistic/stylistic dimensions of the collection, which has its origins in the 1880s thanks to reports in the newspaper La Bilancia, which regularly recorded the donors of items for the future Museo Civico (Civic Museum).
This informative, richly illustrated catalogue will take you on the “ceramic road,” acquaint you with ceramic as part of the rich museum inventory, but also with the hubs of ceramic production throughout the world, while the museum will achieve one of its primary tasks: to make this valuable collection accessible to the scholarly and general public.

Participants will get acquainted with the forgotten defensive system, the Claustra Alpium Iuliarum, which was the largest Roman architectural achievement in the territory of today’s Slovenia and Croatia in the 4th century. It was constructed on the swath from Rijeka in Croatia to Posočje in Slovenia, in an area the Romans called the Julian Alps, and it consisted of walls, towers, fortifications and citadels and the associated buildings in its hinterland. Using models, the workshop sheds light on the life of a soldier in Late Antiquity. Replicas of clothing, weapons and everyday articles such as eating and writing utensils, toiletries and a lamp, give us greater insight into the life of a soldier who was always on the move.
GUIDED TOUR
SOLIN HILLFORT

With the expert guidance of archaeologist Ranko Starac, the curator of the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka, interested citizens can visit the prehistoric and Late Antique hillfort of Solin above Glavani on the western periphery of the Kostrena Municipality. There, while touring parts of the Late Antique fortification complex at Solin, the history and fate of the Claustra Alpium Iuliarium defensive system will be presented. Its focus and main logistical-administrative centre was in fact Tarsatica.
Light but sturdy footwear is required for the tour due to the rocky terrain. Refreshments should also be packed.
Participants will gather at 10 a.m. in the parking lot in front of the Plodine supermarket in Kostrena, whence they will travel by automobiles to the foot of the hill, and then take a macadam road on a light ascent to the site. After touring the site, the group will return to their vehicles on foot.
MIRACLE ROOM
In compliance with the instructions issued by the National Civil Protection Administration pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka has launched the work of its Miracle Room. Until further notice, educational programmes will be held online and outdoors on the terraces and eastern annex of the Governor’s Palace, in front of the Miracle Room and in the gardens, weather permitting.

150 YEARS SINCE THE FIRST ASSEMBLY OF CROATS OF ISTRIA AND THE KVARNER ISLANDS

The First Assembly of Croats from Istria and the Kvarner islands was held on Sveti Mihovil Hill next to Kastav on 21 May 1871. Such assemblies were organized as part of the burgeoning ideas of the Croatian national awakening and Illyrian Movement which gained strength in the 1860s. At that time, the Istrian Croats, through an organized movement, began to bring their national ideas to life. At the First Istrian Assembly, they were supposed to discuss opposition to the merger of Istria, Gorizia and Trieste into a single province. The debate at the assembly was supposed to focus on the “unification of Yugoslavians,” the introduction of the national language to schools and public institutions, and the maritime orientation of the coastal regions. However the authorities banned discussion of these topics, so they could only deliberate on economic and developmental themes. The assembly was organized by distinguished persons from Kastav’s political and social life: F. Steidle, A. Rubeša, F. Marotti, E. Jelušić, F. Kraljić, F. Sever, and J. Velikonja. The Istrian Assembly was one in a series of open-air national activist gatherings that were held in Slovenia and Istria in the 1870s. They were modelled after the Czech Assemblies (Tabori), and their well-known motto was “Složimo se!” (‘Let’s unite’) based on the Czech “Združme se!”
