Hungarian architect Alajos Hauszmann designed a garden pavilion in the eastern section of the gardens of the former Governor’s Palace. The garden pavilion is today the Miracle Room – a museum workshop and play room, which every year gathers more and more children who participate in the activities organized there. For some, it is the first time they encounter themes such as heritage, and the museum itself, a space different from the one in which they normally reside, with their own past and that of their parents and grandparents, and take the first steps into the enchanting world of heritage.
The new circumstances imposed upon us by the COVID-19 pandemic have also changed the way in which the Miracle Room functions, and its programmes have been moved to the digital world. This does not mean, however, that while observing all epidemiological rules, you cannot come to the museum and see the exhibition featuring the works produced by the young artists at the Little Museum Atelier, which will remain open until mid-February.

Through four thematic units – Palace & Museum, Exhibitions, Inventory, and Rijeka – the exhibition showcases the works made during the five years of operation of the Little Museum Atelier under the leadership of Nina Licul, as well as some of the sets from the show Performers from the Gov under the direction of Zoran Josić.
Since the Little Museum Atelier programme and Performers are closely tied to the Museum’s inventory and occasional exhibitions, some Museum materials which served as an inspiration to the Atelier participants and the Performers for their creativity are also on display.

As part of the TEMPUS international project being conducted in three pilot regions in Italy and Croatia, the virtual exhibition Fluxes, dedicated to the ports of Rijeka, Ravenna and Solin, has been posted on the project’s web platform.
The exhibition underscores the historical aspect of the development of these ports and – across different eras – their impact on their immediate surroundings, the cities of which they are a part. Visitors will learn about the commercial, productive and leisure activities that typified life in ports.
This virtual exhibition serves as a platform for entrepreneurs who, by linking the past and present, will see the economic potential of ports and attempt to achieve their ideas based on heritage.
TEMPUS – TEMporary USes as start-up actions to enhance port (in)tangible heritage is a project that gathers nine partners from Croatia and Italy with the aim of regenerating abandoned urban port zones through the use of neglected cultural heritage. The project is aimed at linking the partner cities and their ports and creating new spaces for social life that will encourage creative business, as well as entrepreneurial initiatives in culture and tourism.
A long-term aim of the project is to spur economic development based on appreciation of the concealed tangible and intangible heritage of ports, including the archaeological background and natural context, beginning with temporary uses.
The value of the project is €2,706,920.00, of which 85% is non-refundable, co-financed by the European Union through the transborder cooperation programme INTERREG V-A Italy-Croatia 2014-2020. Project implementation began on 1 January 2019 and continues to June 2022.

As part of the programme for Rijeka 2020 – European Capital of Culture, the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka presented an online exhibition: “Borders: Between Order and Chaos.” The exhibition deals with the problem of borders – real ones, the ones we impose upon ourselves or those imposed by our environment, way of life, traditions… Even though they still exist when we pay them no mind, we believe that the “new normal” caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has made many people aware of certain borders we had never thought about before.
Even though it was originally supposed to be held at three sites: in the Governor’s Palace and at the branch collections in Lipa and Kastav, the “Borders: Between Order and Chaos” was confounded by the “borders” imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, so that it will be presented in virtual form: http://granice.ppmhp.hr/.

Part of the preliminary programme for the exhibition “Borders – Between Order and Chaos” includes the observance of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Dr Franjo Kresnik (1869-1943), one of the greatest Cremonese lutherie experts of his time. Kresnik dedicated over 40 years to the study of bowed string instruments, particularly those made in the workshops of Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù.
A film was shot to accompany the exhibition “Violins Beyond Borders/Stradivari in Rijeka – Kresnik and Cremona,” a joint presentation of the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka and the Museo del Violino. Antonio Stradivari, Guiseppe Guarneri del Gesù and Franjo Kresnik have left behind instruments which are admired to this day, while generations have enjoyed the music that they make. This is why we are calling on everyone to enjoy the music and this film that recalls our great fellow citizen.

The exhibition is part of the European Capital of Culture 2020 programme The Age of Power, and it opened on 12 September 2019 to mark the one-hundredth anniversary of D’Annunzio’s occupation of Rijeka. The exhibition was set up as part of the permanent display on the first floor of the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka. The exhibition’s creators decided to portray the sixteen months of the dictatorship established in Rijeka by Gabriele D’Annunzio, the Italian poet, soldier and nationalist, through the prism of women – in both the figurative and literal senses, through a cross-section of specific historical events and testimony and by presenting several works by Italian futurists which reflect the spirit of this era.
To accompany the exhibition in the Museum, we have also provided our visitors with the possibility of virtual guidance through it.
