The exhibition “After the Last of April” represents the first, working, phase of the interdisciplinary artistic research project of the author duo Karl Čargonja (photographer) and Goran Ferčec (writer), who will explore and record Lipa’s everyday life throughout this anniversary year. They intend to “capture” a period in the lives of 4 generations of survivors of Lipjan – those with whom the survival of the place is carried into the future. At the same time, they intend to record the “silent” and imperceptible echoes of Lipa’s suffering; in the seemingly common and every day, to find cracks through which trauma and memory come to light. Through a spatial installation, the authors will present their texts and photographs made so far and printed in large editions so that visitors can look at them and take them with them. In this way, the exhibited content will be offered to visitors as a starting point for creating their own photographic/textual narrative, which they can rearrange repeatedly – opening it up with new meanings, but also supplementing it by inserting personal photos, records or documents.
The entire “After the Last April” project will be completed in November 2024 with the publication of the artist’s book, which will be a permanent memorial to the 80th anniversary of Lipa’s martyrdom. The project is carried out as part of the annual artistic program “Recognition of Absence”, which the Center started in 2017, and is financed by the funds of the Municipality of Matulji, the City of Rijeka, the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County and the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia.
