Kastav, a town situated on a hillock west of Rijeka, was an important political and cultural hub in the past. Kastav’s residents were proud to call themselves grajani (‘townspeople’), while Kastav’s grajanke (townswomen) kept pace with the fashions of the day. Besides clothes, the latter certainly also included jewellery, such as this leaf-shaped brooch from the first half of the 20th century. The brooch, an exponent from the rich Kastav Regional Museum Collection, became the inspiration for a souvenir and memento of visiting Kastav and the sounds of rustling leaves in the wind-swept tree-tops of the Kastav Forest.
