co-organizer: Rijeka Football Club
location, date and time: Museum’s Marble Hall, 9 May 2024 at 8 p.m.

‘Mountain of Culture’ is a project that links cultural institutions that foster the same or similar values and which, each in its own way, deals with heritage – cultural, cultural-historical, natural, archival, literary, theatrical or musical – or with the restoration of the movable and stationary heritage. Through the synergy of all participants, the project’s goal is to offer themes and events to Rijeka residents and all lovers of culture that will occasionally – in search of new audiences – depart from comfort zones by bringing together the apparently incompatible.
And this is precisely why “A Night in Rijeka” will be organized this year as a precursor to June’s Mountain of Culture in order to link sports and culture, the two fundamental components of urban life that are related at countless levels. Each in its own way contributes to the development of gallant feelings of belonging and identity, pride and even defiance when necessary. And this is why the Rijeka Croatian Football Club has joined the programme this year to the delight of fans of not only football but also the City. Because Rijeka has always been a city of sports. Interesting guests and excellent music will be the calling cards of this entirely special night in Rijeka.
Part of “A Night in Rijeka” will also include the installation of this

EXHIBITION
FACES OF HUNGER: THE SATED NEVER BELIEVE THE STARVING
organizer: Zagreb Ethnographic Museum, Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka
conceived by: Tanja Kocković Zaborski, Ph.D. (Zagreb Ethnographic Museum), Melanija Belaj, Ph.D. (Ethnology and Folklore Research Institute, Zagreb)
visual identity and artistic installation created by: Studio Bilić Müller
Exhibition remains open until 12 May 2024
At a time when strategies to fight hunger and its existence are being devised at the global level, the creators of this exhibition raise awareness of the very concept of hunger, primarily imposed, but also self-imposed.
The various aspects of hunger are examined not only through history, rather particular emphasis is accorded to the struggle against hunger in the modern day. Even though the focus is on Croatia, the theme will also be presented to visitors in the broader context of world hunger.
The exhibition’s creators approached the theme of hunger from three aspects: the struggle against hunger, famine as a political tool and the relationship between hunger and the body, and the objective of the exhibition “Faces of Hunger” and the accompanying activities is to raise awareness of the problem of hunger as well as nutritional disorders.

EXHIBITION
TOUCH THE WORLD
organizers: Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County Association of the Blind
conceived by: Ivo Mileusnić
collaboration and promotion: Filmaktiv Association
Exhibition remains open until 25 September 2024
The exhibition – organized to mark the 75th anniversary of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County Association of the Blind –presents aids for the blind and visually impaired which the Association of the Blind donated to the Museum. Besides these aids, the exhibition also displays the handicrafts and artworks made by the Association’s members during the Creative Workshop led by Mirjana Marin, as well as works by artist Emil Mandarić, the Association’s president and long-time Museum collaborator.
The exhibition’s aim is to raise the public’s awareness of the needs of blind persons in everyday life and present the ways in which the blind can meet their everyday needs, educating themselves and participating in various aspects of social life with the help of aids. Today most of these aids have been replaced by the use of contemporary technologies on computers and smart phones, so the exhibited items constitute an intriguing part of the tiphlotechnical heritage.
The exhibited items serve as testimony about the users of these aids, the blind persons from our region whose life stories testify to the significance of the Association of the Blind for the past 75 years.

As part of this year’s Museum Educational Campaign, we will learn that the diligent hands of museum preparators, restorers and conservators are responsible for the luxuriant frames, lustrous wood and filigreed details. Together with curators, they take care of the collections in the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka on a daily basis. One day they may handle ceramic, on another day glass, and quite often they take care of wood or metal, and that’s when the magic happens. Dust accumulated over many years is blown off, and then knowledge of history, chemistry and technology comes into play. To see all that conservators do in a museum and how well we can all find our bearings in this demanding job, come to the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka. And yes, the dress code calls for old work clothes!

FROM THE SCRAPBOOK (1940-1945)
conceived by: Marko Badurina, Matea Plišić
exhibition opens on 3 May 2024
The exhibition commemorates the end of the Second World War and Liberation Day for Kastav and the Kastav Region. Photographs testify to the efforts made by members of the Antifascist Resistance in the wider Kastav Region, the Rijeka hinterland and Istria. In the wake of the Axis attack on Yugoslavia in April 1941, Kastav natives became actively involved in the resistance movement, wanting to overthrow Italian Fascist and then Nazi rule in the Kastav Region. They traversed an arduous path from their arrival in the forest and their stays in Partisan camps, where they had to contend with hunger, freezing temperatures and heavy combat. The people who remained in the Kastav Region gathered and delivered food and weapons to aid the resistance movement’s campaigns.
