EXHIBITION
REMEMBER ME
organizers: Croatian Restoration Institute, Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka
exhibition conceived by: Andrej Janeš, Ph.D. (CRI) and Jasna Ujčić Grudenić (PPMHP)
the exhibition will remain open until 29 October 2023
Ahead of the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, the exhibition “Remember Me” has been installed in our museum’s Grand Atrium; it is a collaboration between the Croatian Restoration Institute and the Maritime and History Museum off the Croatian Littoral Rijeka.
It presents devotional objects held in the museum’s Archaeology Department which were gathered during archaeological excavations around parish churches in Rijeka and Mošćenice.
Devotional objects are those which encourage and spread piety and evoke religious mysteries. These include small medals, medallions, crosses, talismans and rosaries that were particularly popular in the 17th and 18th centuries. In archaeological excavations they are most often found in graves, because these are personal belongings that were buried together with the deceased.
They were used to remind believers of their faith every day. Among them the most numerous are the small medals bearing images of Jesus or Mary, various saints, sacred objects or places.
Saint, Marian and pilgrimage medals have been curated and presented at the exhibition in separate units, and the pilgrimage medals from Rijeka and Trsat are particularly intriguing.
The Trsat medals were made for the shrine at Trsat where, according to legend, the Holy House of Nazareth was situated from 10 May to 10 December 1294, when it was moved to Loreto. Today the shrine holds the miraculous wooden icon of the Madonna with Child, which is believed to have been painted by St. Luke. In 1715, golden crowns were added to the images of the Madonna and Baby Jesus on the icon, and this image appears on all Trsat medals.
The obverse on the Rijeka medals shows the miraculous crucifix that is today held in the Church of St. Vitus in Rijeka. A view of the city and the sea is in the background. It is believed that the miracle occurred in 1296, when local resident citizen Petar Lončarić, angered by a card game, threw a rock at the crucifix and it began to bleed.
The Archaeology Department of the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka holds a total of 700 exponents with a devotional character, and approximately 170 are presented in this exhibition.
