The Adriatic Sea has been the stage for many naval battles, merciless confrontations between conflicting ships or even attacks by pirates on merchant vessels. A stylized depiction of an early modern era ship can be seen on a stamp held in the Stamp and Heraldry Collection of the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka. The sailing vessel seen in the image corresponds to a type of three-masted ship seen during the transition from the Middle Ages to the Early Modern era, i.e., the 15th-16th centuries. It may be a naval galleon or a vessel for transoceanic voyages with combined square and top sails which linked Adriatic ports to their counterparts on the other side of the Atlantic.
