EXHIBITION

Azulejo – the Art of Portuguese Ceramic Tiles
conceived by: Marina Bagarić, a museum advisor and director of museum’s Ceramics Collection, Architecture Collection and Gilded Leather Collection
organizers: Museum of Arts and Crafts from Zagreb and Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka
Exhibition will remain open until 6 September 2022

The Museum of Arts and Crafts from Zagreb and Maritime and the History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka are presenting exhibition “Azulejo – the Art of Portuguese Ceramic Tiles”. The exhibition’s author, Marina Bagarić, a museum advisor, presents eleven display boards containing compositions of blue-white, glazed and painted ceramic tiles which joined the collection of the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb in 2015 as a donation from the Croatian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. The tiles are the products of Lisbon workshops from the first half of the 18th century, and once, in secondary use, they adorned the walls of the embassy of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in Portugal. That building was inherited by the Republic of Croatia, and the tiles, with the consent of the Portuguese authorities, were removed from the walls. Eleven panels were donated to the Museum of Arts and Crafts, while the remaining six remain in the new building of the Croatian Embassy in Lisbon.
The history of Portuguese azulejo is tied to the visit of King Manuel I to Spain at the end of the 15th century, where he was impressed with the Hispano-Moorish palaces and decided to decorate his residence in Sintra with Spanish tile. The tiles were initially imported from Spain, but the maiolica technique was soon mastered by local craftsmen, so azulejo, thanks to the commitment of the painters who produced it, acquired the status of artworks during the 18th century, and as of 2017, they even have their own day by decree of the Portuguese parliament: 6 May is National Azulejo Day.
The name of the azulejo tiles was taken from Spanish, but its origin lies in the Arabic word al-zillij (zellij) meaning ‘polished flat stone’.
The production of the tiles was extensive, because they were used to decorate the interiors of private, public and religious buildings, highly-frequented and ancillary rooms, yards, stairways, streets and entire façades. They are dominated by blue-white panels, and their motifs are numerous. Originally the glazed ceramic surfaces had to imitate stone mosaics, but they became far more than that, a recognizable symbol of Portuguese culture and the tradition of a nation.
Since azulejo is linked to the maritime tradition of Portugal and its colonies, the exhibition is symbolically supplemented with a model of a brig from the inventory of the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka.

EXHIBITION

STORIES OF THE BLUE HORIZON, JUGOLINIJA’S 75 YEARS
conceived by: Nikša Mendeš
organizer: Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka
Exhibition will remain open until 9 October 2022

The City of Rijeka has produced numerous successful companies in its history. Unfortunately, many of them can today only be found in books and the reminiscences of individuals whose lives they marked. Jugolinija was one such company. This exhibition is dedicated to it and the people who were tied to it and on whose lives it left an indelible trace.
In it, we not only observe the 75th anniversary of the establishment of shipping company Jugolinija/Croatia Line, but also recall its predecessors, as far back as the twilight of ocean-going sail ships, through Rijeka’s steamships of the interwar years which each in their own way set the foundation for the largest shipping company in this city’s history.
The exhibition highlights all of the major moments in the course of Jugolinija’s long history, until its name was changed to Croatia Line in 1992, but we also recall the losses of sailors who forever remain in the sea’s depths after some of Jugolinija’s ships sank. We also stress the importance of Jugolinija to the domestic shipbuilding industry. Many of its ships burnished the reputation of local shipyards, and we note with particular pride Rijeka’s 3. maj shipyard, which made the greatest contribution to developing Jugolinija as one of the biggest shipping companies of its time. Jugolinija was not just a shipping company, it was a motor of this city’s economic growth, and the exhibition also underscores this aspect.
Yet another form of remembrance of Jugolinija is the museum’s Croatia Line Collection, of which a part will be presented to the public for the first time here. The collection is a valuable component of the Museum’s inventory, because it shows the history of a company in one place, bearing witness to the progress of this region and its people, regardless of historical changes over a relatively brief period.
Workshops, lectures, guided tours and other programmes thematically tied to the exhibition will be held for its duration.

MIRACLE ROOM
The workshops for young creators are held in the Miracle Room at the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka and in the Museum’s garden. Educational programmes are also being held at the remote collections.
