The bocce court, locally most often called the jog, is a frequent, almost indispensable, locus in many villages and towns, as well as larger urban areas. “The jog is the last oasis of the old way of life,” some of our interviewees have claimed. A (seemingly) spontaneous form of entertainment practiced mostly on Sundays and holidays, bocce is the epitome of a balanced way of life, the exact opposite to the hard physical labour that characterised the lives of our ancestors. A bocce court was a place where you could always find someone dear, ready to play a game. It is still such a place. Because… “bocce is not difficult; anybody can play it, and it’s so much fun.”
