With the exhibition “From a Small Harbour to Transoceanic Port,” the Maritime and Historical Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka is joining the observation of the 300th anniversary of the proclamation of Rijeka as a free port in 1719.
Through several thematic units, the exhibition follows the development of this port by the city: from the Middle Ages and the events that preceded the conferral of free port status for Rijeka in 1719, through the reigns of Emperor Charles VI and Empress Maria Theresa and the first half of the 19th century, when the idea of constructing a new port west of the Rječina River emerged, to the most significant era in its history, the 1880s and 1890s.

As a part of the observance of the ninth Art History Day in the Maritime and Historical Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka, a thematic exhibition, “Rijeka’s (Applied) Stories” will be staged.
Applied art pieces of the Art Nouveau era from Rijeka and its environs will be displayed in the exhibition, accompanied by stories associated with them.

The exhibition will run until 2 June 2019

The exhibition “Man and the Sea – Fishing in Antiquity Through the Collection of the Archaeological Museum in Zadar” will show fishing as a segment of life in Antiquity, while visitors will learn about the mythology and portrayals of deities and the products and economic activities tied to the sea (fish farms, salt production, and seafood as a delicacy).
The materials presented in the exhibition are a part of the collection of the Archaeological Museum in Zadar.

The picture book Rigojanči – ljubav kao slatko nadahnuće (Rigojanči – Love as Sweet Inspiration) is part of a project conceived by the Maritime and Historical Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka and the Peak&Poke Museum, which, first in an exhibition and now through this book, presents the rigojanči, a confection inspired by the love between Hungarian violinist Jancsi Rigó and Belgium’s Clara Ward, Princesse de Caraman Chimay.[:]
