The Kastav Regional Museum Collection, a branch of the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka, is re-opening its doors to visitors after renovation. The history of Kastav and the wider environs (Kastav\u0161tina) is presented in the permanent display in three thematic units: The Origin of Kastav, Culture and Education in Kastav\u0161tina, and Life on the Border.
\nThe first theme presents the emergence of the initial settlement and the development of the town of Kastav over time. The second is dedicated to education, Kastav\u2019s cultural associations and the era of the national awakening in Kastav\u0161tina. The third highlights the partition of the region after the First World War and its plight in the Second World War and the casualties suffered by many Kastav natives in fascist and Nazi camps.
\nThe exhibition \u201cFrom the Museum\u2019s Time Machine\u201d is installed in the foyer, presenting the Collection\u2019s first opening in 1981.<\/p>\n

As part of the Night of Museums event held under the slogan \u201cMuseums Matter\u201d, an exhibition was installed that presents some of the exponents that were donated to or collected or legally inherited by the Museum in 2022 to become part of its inventory. Also on display are posters that show the museum\u2019s visitors and collaborators sharing their thoughts on the importance of museums. Thus, the exhibition highlights a researcher who makes use of the Museum\u2019s materials and documentation, a child who participates in museum workshops, a writer who presented her book in the Museum and a collaborator involved in the creative activities whereby the Museum attempts to foster more direct involvement in its work by the local community.<\/p>\n

\nCHILDHOOD BEHIND THE IRON CURTAIN<\/strong>

The exhibition \u201cChildhood Behind the Iron Curtain\u201d takes us back to the 1970s and 1980s and halts at the brink of our childhood world\u2019s collapse, a time of \u201cgreat longing\u201d for the material goods from the other side of the \u201ccurtain.\u201d This exhibition is about children, who grew up under the sway of Josip Broz Tito\u2019s cult of personality, but also under the influence of Western European and American heroes from comics, cartoons and movies.<\/p>\n

MIRACLE ROOM<\/strong>
\nThe workshops for young creators are held in the Miracle Room at the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka and in the Museum\u2019s garden. Educational programmes are also being held at the remote collections.<\/p>\n

MORNING IN THE MUSEUM<\/strong>
\n\u201cWOMEN IN THE MUSEUM\u201d WORKSHOP<\/strong>

The workshop is intended for primary school children, and suitable for children with physical disabilities and developmental impairments. The workshop will observe International Day of Women and Girls in Science which, pursuant to a decision of the UN General Assembly, has been observed since 2015 with the aim of promoting equal access by girls and women to education, training, work and decision-making in science.<\/p>\n

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS IN THE MUSEUM<\/strong>
\n\u201cOUR CHILDHOOD\u201d WORKSHOP<\/strong>

The \u201cOur Childhood\u201d workshop accompanying the \u201cChildhood Behind the Iron Curtain\u201d exhibition will bring together generations who grew up with different, yet still rather similar toys and games. In the first four days participants will learn about old games and make new ones, while on the fifth day the workshop will link the experiences from the childhoods of grandparents, parents and children! These school holidays will be marked by the joy and playfulness of children and, we hope, adults, because in the words of Antoine de Saint-Exupery, who wrote The Little Prince, \u201cAll grown-ups were once children… but only few of them remember it.\u201d<\/p>\n

BIRTHDAY IN THE MUSEUM<\/strong>
\nEducational birthday workshops in the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka are aimed at children aged 4 to 12. The workshops are thematic, and the celebrants can choose from six available themes: \u2018Masquerade Ball,\u2019 \u2018The Trsat Dragon,\u2019 \u2018On-board Emergency,\u2019 \u2018Unusual Form,\u2019 \u2018Challenge Trail,\u2019 and \u2018Treasure Hunt.\u2019
\nThe programme will proceed in the Museum\u2019s premises. Must be arranged in advance.<\/p>\n

MIRACLE ROOM ON THE ROAD<\/strong>
\nMiracle Room on the Road is intended for children from distant schools, so that they can more easily participate in educational and creative programmes tied to the Museum\u2019s inventory and content, as well as segments of the local cultural and historical heritage.<\/p>\n

The exhibition showcases the carnival period from the Feast of St. Anthony, 17 January, to the lighting of the bonfire in Lipa, i.e., until Ash Wednesday on 22 February. On the last day of carnival, masqueraders go from house to house, and residents give them eggs, sausage and bacon. The exhibition places special emphasis on the zvon\u010dari (bell-ringers). They were established in 2007, and what sets them apart from other bell-ringers in the Matulji Municipality are their green shirts and the green stripes on their white trousers (inspired by the forest since most Lipa natives used to be foresters) and their hats made of juniper twigs and cr\u00eape-paper roses.<\/p>\n
