EXHIBITION<\/strong> Do you play bocce? Or do you play bowls? Regardless of your response, perhaps you\u2019re wondering why the museum is organizing an exhibition dedicated to bocce. EXHIBITION The Museum of Arts and Crafts from Zagreb and Maritime and the History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka are presenting exhibition \u201cAzulejo \u2013 the Art of Portuguese Ceramic Tiles\u201d.<\/strong> The exhibition\u2019s author, Marina Bagari\u0107, a museum advisor, presents eleven display boards containing compositions of blue-white, glazed and painted ceramic tiles. The tiles are the products of Lisbon workshops from the first half of the 18th century. Azulejo acquired the status of artworks during the 18th century, and as of 2017, they even have their own day by decree of the Portuguese parliament: 6 May is National Azulejo Day. EXHIBITION <\/strong> The exhibition is dedicated to Jugolinija \u2013 once one of Rijeka\u2019s most successful companies \u2013 and to the people who were tied to it and whose lives it indelibly marked. BOOK PRESENTATION<\/strong> At the end of 2020, the Sergej Ma\u0161era Maritime Museum in Piran published the book Sava i Jolanda (Sava and Jolanda) by Nada Ter\u010don. This is a book that presents Jolanda Gruden and Sava Kalu\u017ea, the first schooled Slovenian and Yugoslav mariners. Besides the daughter of the two mariners, the book also involved the collaboration of Nik\u0161a Mende\u0161, a museum advisor and the curator of the Maritime History Section, who created the exhibition \u201cTales of the Blue Horizon \u2013 Jugolinija\u2019s 75 Years,\u201d for which this book presentation is an accompanying activity. An interesting detail is that after he stopped working as a sailor, Sava Kalu\u017ea was employed in Jugolinija\u2019s management.<\/p>\n LECTURE<\/strong> Collaboration with the Croatian Restoration Institute continues, as their experts deliver intriguing lectures to present their \u201cbehind the scenes\u201d work, unknown to most. How much knowledge, time and patience are required to ensure that the ceiling paintings in our theatre shine in their full glory ahead of the new season will be presented by Ana Ru\u0161in Buli\u0107, a senior conservationist and restorer whose narrower specialization is paintings on various surfaces.<\/p>\n MIRACLE ROOM<\/strong> MORNING IN THE MUSEUM To accompany the exhibition \u201cBocce and Bocce Conversations\u201d and as part of the Miracle Room\u2019s educational programmes, a workshop will be held to familiarize participates with bocce as a sport, but also as a now already somewhat forgotten form of socializing. They will also get to know some of the board and card games that marked the childhoods of older generations. \nLife by the sea, outdoors in pleasant company, delineates the romantic picture of the Mediterranean, whence bocce in fact originated. This traditional game, in which the main objective is to roll or throw a ball (bo\u0107a) to get as close as possible to the target ball, the so-called \u2018jack\u2019 or \u2018pallino\u2019 (bulin), reflects the specific way of life in these parts. This is an intangible heritage which is characterized by few physical artefacts, but which is an outsized component of identity.
\nBocce, like all elements of the cultural heritage, is subject to change. Although it has also been a sports discipline for decades, in which Croatia achieves exceptional results, our focus here is on \u2018traditional\u2019, \u2018old-fashioned\u2019 bocce. The two forms of this single activity, despite many differences, are linked by the phenomena of physical activity and, first and foremost, socializing.
\nThe bocce court, locally most often called the jog, is a common and inescapable feature of many communities, including larger urban areas. \u201cThe jog is the last oasis of the old way of life,\u201d according to some individuals with whom we spoke. As \u2013 at first glance \u2013 a spontaneous leisure activity practiced mostly on Sundays and holidays, bocce represents the essence of a balanced lifestyle, a contrast to the heavy physical labour that characterized the lives of our forebears. Bocce courts were places at which someone dear to us could always be found, ready to play. Even today it is such a place. Because\u2026 \u201cbocce is not difficult, truly anyone can play it, and it\u2019s amazing how fun it all is.\u201d

\nIn it, we not only observe the 75th anniversary of the establishment of shipping company Jugolinija\/Croatia Line, but also recall its predecessors, as far back as the twilight of ocean-going sail ships, through Rijeka\u2019s steamships of the interwar years which each in their own way set the foundation for the largest shipping company in this city\u2019s history.
\nYet another form of remembrance of Jugolinija is the museum\u2019s Croatia Line Collection, of which a part will be presented to the public for the first time here.
\nWorkshops, lectures, guided tours and other programmes thematically tied to the exhibition will be held for its duration.<\/p>\n

\nEducational birthday workshops in the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka are aimed at children aged 4 to 12. The workshops are thematic, and the celebrants can choose from six available themes: \u2018Masquerade Ball,\u2019 \u2018The Trsat Dragon,\u2019 \u2018On-board Emergency,\u2019 \u2018Unusual Form,\u2019 \u2018Challenge Trail,\u2019 and \u2018Treasure Hunt.\u2019
\nThe programme will proceed in the Museum\u2019s premises. Must be arranged in advance.
\nThe price for ten children is HRK 600. An additional HRK 40 is charged for each additional child \u2013 up to a maximum of 15.<\/p>\n
\nMiracle Room on the Road is intended for children from distant schools, so that they can more easily participate in educational and creative programmes tied to the Museum\u2019s inventory and content, as well as segments of the local cultural and historical heritage.<\/p>\n
