Reberski).Since, as an archaeologist, she conducted excavations and discovered and interpreted sites from the Croatian Littoral and Liburnian territory, and especially Rijeka’s terrain, she greatly enhanced knowledge of the area’s earliest past and explained the existence and development of the city of Rijeka. Her results and observations about urban structures opened the eyes of many fellow citizens, who began to ‘read’ the City of Rijeka with the help of the very eloquent, comprehensible, simple, intriguing and above all instructive texts in the book Kako čitati grad (How To Read the City), which is still topical even 30 years after its first edition. Her other books are no less significant. “What one can say without doubt about Radmila Matejčić is that she was one of the most active, productive and original scholarly creators in the Croatian Littoral in the post-war period, to which her extensive bibliography attests” (Ante Meštrović).
Radmila Matejčić was equally active in social life with her many public speeches, university and public lectures, interviews and television appearances, always addressing both experts and the broader public, becoming something of an arbiter in the frequently ambiguous situations in the city involving the cultural heritage. Already at an early phase, her views earned her considerable popularity in Rijeka, and even beyond, because her interests were not only focused on culture, but rather on a diversity of social events in Rijeka and its environs.
Through its limited series of biographies about their notable colleagues, the Rijeka Association of Art Historians is preserving the memory of the work of Boris Vižintin, Vanda Ekl and now, in its latest edition, Radmila Matejčić, written by Daina Glavočić, with the hope that their accomplishments will bring them closer to the public that did not know them during their lifetimes.
EXHIBITION
ON THE TRAIL OF THE CROATIAN HERITAGE
organizer: Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka
conceived by: Marko Gracin, Slavica Mrkić Modrić
opening: Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka, 12 March 2020 at 7 p.m.
the exhibition will remain open until 10 April 2020
The project “On the Trail of the Croatian Heritage” has been conceived as a customary ‘picture book’ to remind those in the know and educate the uninformed about Croatia’s wealth of heritage by means of photographs and written records.
This is a pleasant journey through the Croatian past, identity and roots of ‘Our Beautiful Homeland’, accompanied by the music of traditional instruments, folk dances and songs, all so that, as Littoral natives would say, “our customs don’t disappear.”
Besides preservation of the national identity, one of the exhibition’s goals is to underline the fact that this city is a port of diversity and that all who have come here over the centuries brought with them little pieces of the traditional wealth of their own homelands, thus always creating a new and different Rijeka. The intention is to show that migrations were and remain a part of the existence of the city on the Rječina River, something upon which that Rijeka difference rests, and that mosaic of customs that is very specific to Rijeka.
On the 22 photographs presenting some of Croatia’s traditional customs (the silent ring dance of Vrlika, the Ljelja dance from Gorjani, the Pupnat sword dance from Korčula, and the traditional songs and dances from Istria, Slavonia Lika and Turopolje), the exhibition’s creators paid tribute to all of those who have found their second home in Rijeka, but also give a part of themselves to Rijeka.
EXHIBITION
VIOLINS BEYOND BORDERS/STRADIVARI IN RIJEKA – KRESNIK AND CREMONA
organizer: Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka
co-organizers: Consulate General of the Republic of Italy in Croatia (Rijeka), Glazbeni Festival Kvarner d.o.o. Kresnik dedicated over 40 years to the study of bowed string instruments, particularly those made in the workshops of Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù. In his honour, instruments made by these two great luthiers will be exhibited in the Museum.
Franjo Kresnik’s musical heritage and work will be viewed through the context of the economic, political and social circumstances of that time. Kresnik’s passion, his study of Italian, and particularly Cremonese, classical violins, and his later production of instruments in his own workshop surpassed the borders that politics had imposed on the place in which he lived. He played a crucial role in the events leading to the establishment of the International School of Violin-making in Cremona, so that he was even called the school’s corresponding director. He was a member of Akademija – a society of Croatian intellectuals – and a representative of the Italian Craftsmanship Association. He provided medical treatment to D’Annunzio’s Arditi and volunteered in the Banovina hospital in Sušak, showing in his life and work that he did not acknowledge borders, whether real or imaginary. His contemporaries described him as being Viennese by birth, a resident of Yugoslavia, but an Italian in spirit. But Franjo Kresnik, a denizen of Sušak and Rijeka, was a citizen of Europe whose activities bridged political borders and left an indelible mark on the preservation of Cremonese lutherie.
EXHIBITION
D’ANNUNZIO’S MARTYR – L’OLOCAUSTA DI D’ANNUNZIO
organizer: Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka
exhibition conceived by: Tea Perinčić and Ana-Maria Milčić
exhibition designed by: Sanjin Kunić and Nikolina Radić Štivić
the exhibition will remain open until 31 January 2021
As an introduction to the project Borders: Between Order and Chaos, which the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka is implementing as part of the European Capital of Culture 2020 programme The Age of Power, the Museum will stage an exhibition which marks the one-hundredth anniversary of D’Annunzio’s occupation of Rijeka on 12 September 1919.
The exhibition also alludes to D’Annunzio’s attitude toward the women in his life, who, after ending relationships with him, were “physically and emotionally spent,” just like the city of Rijeka.
EXHIBITION
MEASURING DEVICES FROM THE ISKRA KRANJ FACTORY
organizer: Rijeka Technical Culture Community, Technical Museum of Slovenia
co-organizer: Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka
the exhibition will remain open until 4 April 2020
The Technical Museum of Slovenia has a rich collection of measuring devices from the Iskra Kranj Factory. The Lado Ensemble Orchestra, with its programme “Traditional Croatian Instruments and Ensembles,” will demonstrate virtually every traditional instrument ever used, some of which are still actively played in Croatia and in regions in which Croats live. Thus, Lado’s musicians playing numerous wind, string and other traditional instruments will dynamically alternate on the stage. Some of the instruments are no longer played today, but they have been reconstructed and thus rescued from oblivion. The musical journey will take us from Istria to Baranja and northern Bačka, from Međimurje through Moslavina and Banovina to the Dalmatian islands and towns, demonstrating a specific and exceptionally diverse musical style.
The Lado Ensemble Orchestra has thus far recorded three albums, and thanks to the professionalism and enthusiasm of the ensemble’s former art director Ivan Ivančan, in 2017 the book LADO – Hrvatska tradicijska glazbala i sastavi was published – and its title was also used for this programme.
Ahead of the concert, an hour-long presentation of the traditional instruments will be held for anyone interested.
