As a part of the Rijeka 2020 \u2013 European Capital of Culture project, the exhibition \u201cViolin Beyond Borders \/ Stradivari in Rijeka \u2013 Kresnik and Cremona\u201d will open in the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka on 6 December 2019 at 6 p.m<\/strong>. This exhibition will mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Franjo Kresnik, a Rijeka native who discovered the secret to making the finest violins in the world, which at the turn of the 17th into the 18th century were made in Cremona, Italy by Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri del Ges\u00f9.
\nThe Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka, in partnership with the Museo del Violino in Cremona, is bringing eight violins to Rijeka, including an original Stradivarius and another made by Giuseppe Guarneri del Ges\u00f9. Violins made by Dr. Kresnik will be exhibited together with them.
\nKresnik was a physician and violin-maker in Rijeka, and one of the greatest authorities on the Cremonese lutherie tradition. He could recognize an instrument\u2019s maker and the year of its production solely based on its sound. In European violin circles, he was therefore known as \u201cthe man who reads violins.\u201d
\nTraditional violin craftsmanship in Cremona has been registered in UNESCO\u2019s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
\nThe exhibition will be accompanied by concerts featuring violins made by Kresnik, Stradivari and Guarneri. The first of them will be held at the exhibition\u2019s opening, when Marco Bronzi will play the Stradivarius Lam violin and the Guarneri Prince Doria violin. He will be accompanied by Davide Burani on the harp.
\nThe co-organizers of this exhibition and the accompanying musical events are the Consulate General of the Republic of Italy in Croatia (Rijeka) and Festival Kvarner, while the programme is being financially and technically supported by the companies Infobip and Prostoria.
\nThe exhibition is part of the \u201cAge of Power\u201d programme, a component of the Rijeka 2020 \u2013European Capital of Culture project.
