These are items which, in more refined or simpler variants, could be found in every household in the 19th, but also 20th and even 21st centuries, and which are more likely to evoke the memories and aromas of childhood than attract the attention of scholars. And this is precisely why, in the shadow of more artistically and historically significant exponents, their interpretation was often neglected and limited to basic classification data, little to nothing has been written about them and they have almost exclusively been interesting to specialized collectors and ceramic aficionados. But in the light of renewed interest in ceramic, its development and the information that it conveys, regardless of when it was made, we are presenting ceramic items from the “industrial era” from the Museum’s depot.
The Collection’s origins go back to the 1880s, when materials began to be gathered for the museum being established at the time: the Museo Civico, or Civic Museum. The second major gathering drive occurred in 1933/34, when the Sušak Town Museum was established, while the third and final drive occurred just after the end of the Second World War, from 1945 to 1953, when the primary procurement criteria was quantity rather than quality. The most common exponents in the Collection are simple tableware (plates, platters, cups and bowls) adorned in various techniques, mostly produced in English (Davenport, Cardiff, Wedgwood, Coalport, Staffordshire, etc.), German (Meissen, Verandach, Wallerfagen), Austrian (Old Vienna), French (U&G, Sarrequemines), Italian and Czech factories and plants from the end of the 18th to the mid-20th century.
The ceramics from the inventory and select exponents from other Croatian museums and institutions reflect the most significant technological and cultural progress that dictated and directed overall ceramic production, and also ensured the continuity and development of ceramic types from prehistory to the present, twenty thousand years of modification of a single basic form.
After this exhibition, you will certainly never again take for granted the vessels you put on your table, or see in your grandmother’s kitchen, or stumble over in pieces while strolling on a beach in Kvarner.

PPMHP 113384 Potpourri vase, Meissen, 1858
The exhibition “Our Daily Ceramic” will be accompanied by a parallel exhibition:
GRAND TOUR – DISCOVERY OF TRADITIONAL ITALIAN CERAMIC
organizers: AiCC – Associazione Italiana Città della Ceramica and the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka
exhibition conceived by: Jean Blanchaert, Viola Emaldi, Anty Pansera
opening: 6 September 2019 at 7 p.m. in the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka
the exhibition will remain open until 17 November 2019
The exhibition “Grand Tour – Discovery of Traditional Italian Ceramic” is a travelling exhibition that presents 40 Italian cities from Apulia to Veneto, from Sicily and Sardinia to Liguria and Piedmont, from Abruzzo to Romagna and Tuscany. So in the exhibition, the City at the time of his occupation (1919-1921) will be presented in the way Rijeka was personified in the artworks of that period – as a woman. The exhibition investigates the status of women and the role of the female body during a time of political instability and military conflict, specifically the use of the female body as a metaphor for territory and national borders.
In Italian interwar political rhetoric, Rijeka, as a place of irredentist interest (a location outside of Italian territory which was believed to belong to Italy, without which the state is incomplete; from the Ital. word irredente – unredeemed), has always had a special status as a locus of regeneration. In other words, continuing with the 19th-century narrative of Italian regeneration (Risorgimento), Rijeka became a place through which Italy could improve its geopolitical standing. In Gabriele D’Annunzio’s political speech, the city of Rijeka became a woman’s body, and political, military and national motifs began to intermingle with eroticism, corporality and also violence. The works of the Futurist artists, particularly their leader Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, exhibit a similar melding of territory, nationality, war, eroticism and the female body in the context of Rijeka and irredentism. At the same time, the Croatian satirical magazine Koprive and the Rijeka Italian publication La Vedetta d’Italia, as well as an abundance of propaganda materials, used the same analogy in the anthropomorphized versions of Rijeka, Italy and Yugoslavia. Through a feminist and post-colonial research prism, the exhibition follows the artistic, propagandist and personal correspondence tied to Rijeka in that era.
The exhibition also alludes to D’Annunzio’s attitude toward the women in his life, who, after ending relationships with him, were “physically and emotionally spent,” just like the city of Rijeka.
EXHIBITION
AIDS FOR THE BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED
organizers: Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka
co-organizer: Primorje-Gorski Kotar County Association of the Blind
exhibition conceived by: Ivo Mileusnić
opening: 19 September 2019 at 12 p.m. in the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka
the exhibition will remain open until 6 October 2019
To observe the 70th anniversary of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County Association of the Blind, the exhibition “Aids for the Blind and Visually Impaired” will be staged in the Marble Hall of the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka.
