The exhibition can be viewed until 4 December 2022
The exhibition encompasses the period from the end of the First World War to 25 April 1921, when the Italian poet and ultra-nationalist Gabriele D’Annunzio, leading his legionnaires and Arditi, entered the city of Rijeka, set up a government and established the Italian Regency of Carnaro, which also encompassed the island of Krk.
The Arditi reign of terror on Krk was characterized by brutality against local residents, looting of their property, campaigns of intimidation and armed assaults against certain towns on Krk (Punat and Dobrinj). The ‘Bloody Christmas’ of 1920 is still vivid in the collective memory of Baška’s residents. The fiercest opposition to the Arditi was mounted by the residents of Punat when defending their community. The Arditi were conclusively defeated in January of 1921 by the residents of Dobrinj, assisted by volunteers from the mainland.
