Tokyo impressed me the most because of its mega-size and systems that function despite that size. One of the things I often think about when riding on the tram back in Zagreb is that the Japanese don't talk on their cell phones on the metro (and train). They use them, but they don't talk, let alone play loud video content like people do over here. I was surprised that they gladly accept payment in cash and that cards are not mandatory. Visiting a kabuki theatre, although I had known about them, was a kind of a "culture shock" for me, as were parlours where adults played slot machines like crazy. Another thing that caught my eye were all those women who go to great lengths to shield themselves from sunshine.
