The Collection of Stone Items

Head: MSc. Ivana Šarić Žic, curator

The Collection of Stone Items from the ethnography department was formed in 1956, at the same time as the department, with the purpose of collecting and interpreting ethnographic material from the area of the Croatian Littoral, the associated islands as well as Gorski Kotar. The collection is dominated by stone vessels for storing oil, in various sizes and shapes. There are also several well preserved mortars – containers for grinding grains and spices.
Of particular interest is a stone crown on a water tank from Kostrena, on which is carved the initials “AP” and the year “1857”.
The collection, dating mainly from the 19th century, presents evidence of a substantial stone-carving industry in the county, and is therefore a material witness of the artisan traditions in this region.
