The Collection of Postage Stamps

Head: Ivo Mileusnić, curator

With the reorganisation of the collections in 2007 of the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral in Rijeka the Collection of Postage Stamps was established within the cultural-history department. Only with the analysis of the museum’s material and documentation will the items be recorded, cleaned and sorted. The material of the Collection of Postage Stamps is possible to be separated from the old holdings and material which existed outside the collection. The first activity relates to the compiling and cataloguing inside the museum. In order to preserve and protect the collection regular preventive protection care will be carried out which will precede the visualisation of the future holding of the Collection of Postage Stamps.
The collection contains approximately 223 items. They are postage and tax stamps from Austria (Austro-Hungary), Montenegro, Serbia, then the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Kingdom of Yugoslavia), the Independent State of Croatia and the post-war Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the so-called stamps of Fiume and postage stamps of the City of Sušak.
According to the types of items the collection will possess postage and tax stamps separated from other philatelic material which belong to other collections in the museum, and from which it is not possible to separate. Additional acquisition of material is possible by purchases and donations from public establishments and individuals.
With the establishment of this collection the possibility will be created for the assembly of part of the philatelic items and materials connected with the regional character of the museum and the specifics of the area in which this material was in circulation.
