The Numismatic Collection

Head: Ivo Mileusnić, curator

The Numismatic Collection of the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka was sorted from the archaeological to the cultural-historical department with the reorganisation of the collections in 2007. The collection’s holding brings together material classified into three groups – antique money, money from the Middle and Modern Ages and medals. The method of collection numismatic material is varied, and includes finds from archaeological excavations, donated items and the purchase of items however the basic part of the material is made up of the inventory of the former Museo Civico and the City Museum of Sušak. According to the data from a revision of 2005 the collection consists of a total of 5,464 items of which 4,404 are inventoried items and 1,060 non-inventoried numismatic items. In the computer program M++ 960 items have been inventoried. The collection’s material is currently stored and preserved in the storeroom of the archaeological department. Even though the material has yet to have been exhibited a selection of numismatic items for a new permanent display is being prepared.
With the aim of preserving and protecting the collection regular preventive protection is being carried out which precedes the viewing of the numismatic holding.
The history of the creation of the Numismatic Collection was from the very beginning woven into the effort of the foundation of the City Museum of Rijeka, as well as being closely linked with the developing path of the City Museum of Sušak. The concept of the Numismatic Collection of the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral, as a regional i.e. county museum does not have a direct general national character. The task of the Numismatic Collection fits into the basic task of the very museum in which it belongs, and which is limited to the area of its operations. According to this, the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral must in the form of its numismatic collection gather money and methods of payment which were in use in the area of the museum’s operation with a special emphasis on regional specificities and characteristics. This is after all the basic principle for a numismatic collection of a regional museum. In this way the Numismatic Collection of the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral as a county museum will give a significant contribution to common national numismatics, and along with that the national common culture and history in general.
