The Museum Collection of the Kastav Region

Head: MarkoBadurina, curator

The complex holdings of the heritage collection include around 2,000 items: varied archaeological (archaeological department of the main museum), ethnographical, cultural-historical and historical material. The ethnologic material includes a variety of utility and decorative items connected with everyday life of the local people of the Kastav region and their customs (clothing, household items, devotional items). There are also items connected with the economy (particularly agriculture and viticulture) and the sub-collection items connected with arts and crafts (mostly tools and the products of coopers, blacksmiths, coppersmiths, carpenters), that are particularly significant activities in this region. The heterogeneous cultural-historical and historical material primarily includes objects from the 19th and 20th centuries. Also belonging to the holding are printed and handwritten materials, photographs and picture postcards, school creations and drawings, textile items, symbols of cultural-educational organisations, the National Revival in Istria, the labour movement, and weapons from the period of the National Liberation struggle. Part of the thematic material is selected and exhibited in the display of the collection in Kastav, systematically enlarged since 2004. The remaining part of the holding is stored by types of materials in the storerooms of the main museum where appropriate measures of preventative protection are undertaken. The collection is highlighted with historical, ethnographical and artisan items, which document the identity of the town and the social and cultural-historical life of the Kastav region, as well as the specific intangible heritage which illustrates the traditional values of this area.
