Heraldry workshops

FLAGS AND SYMBOLS

Age: 4 – 7 grade
Duration: 2 school hours

Through play and practical work in the workshop students deepen, expand and systemise the knowledge which they also gain everyday in school, in the context of material about national symbols. Students will become familiar with the basic elements of flags, and will analyse several historical flags from the museum’s holdings which carry some characteristics of a nation, but which belonged to varying associations.

  1. Part: specific guidance – viewing of historical flags, whereby students discover the motifs which are featured on them and a discussion about their meaning and their reasons for being used
  2. Part: the making of an imaginary flag which could be a symbol of their class or school

FORMS OF HISTORICAL FLAGS

Age: 4 – 8 grade

An educational workshop which through play and practical work deepens and expands the knowledge of symbols. During the entire teaching as well as experiential period, the children encounter the symbols of various social groups. In the workshop they will become familiar with flags and their forms and meanings from Antiquity to the present day.

  1. Part: in the viewing of flags displayed on various objects in the museum’s permanent exhibition and in photographs; the students will discover who wears a flag and what kind of form
  2. Part: the students will split into pairs and each pair will receive a task to make one of the historical flags, to cut out a determined flag shape and to draw a motif on it

THE EMERGENCE OF COATS OF ARMS

Age: 4 – 8 grade
Duration: 2 school hours

Through play and practical work the workshop brings students closer to the basics of heraldry, the science which deals with the study of coats of arms, heralds, crests etc. The basic concepts and principles of making coats of arms will be introduced, as well as the emergence and functions of the earliest known examples.

  1. Part: a viewing of coats of arms on the displayed objects in the museum’s permanent exhibition and in photographs
  2. Part: the making of a coat of arms on a base in the shape of a shield

RIJEKA’S COAT OF ARMS

Age: 4 – 8 grade
Duration: 2 hours

In this workshop the children will, using the example of Rijeka’s coat of arms, through play become familiar with charters and the method of assigning coats of arms. The transformation which a coat of arms passes through in history and its artistic interpretation will also be followed.

  1. Part: the study of the charter connected with Rijeka’s coat of arms. Alongside reading the children will try to illustrate the coat of arms and after that they will compare it with a representation from the display
  2. Part: pointing out the key changes on the coat of arms
  3. Part: observation of objects from the museum’s holdings where elements of the coat of arms are used and drawing compositions with elements of the coat of arms

OBITELJSKO STABLO

The workshop is educational and fun, it relies on an object from the museum’s holdings which outlines the genealogical tree of the Steinberg family. The students will become familiar with the principles of making a family tree which will used to make their own family tree. The workshop will encourage them to explore their own family
