Antiquity Collection

Head: Ranko Starac, curator

The Antiquity Collection consists of items which testify to the traces of ancient civilisations of the region of the Croatian Littoral and the Kvarner islands, until the Early Byzantine period. The foundation is a collection of material from the holdings of the Museo Civico and the City Museum of Sušak. The collection came into existence in 1962 when with the separation from the cultural-historical department the archaeological department was formed. With the new archaeological research in the area of ancient Tarsaticae, and the surroundings, the collection gradually developed. The collection consists of 510 items which have been inventoried (ceramic, glass, metal), digitalised and entered into a computer database. The dominate material comes mainly from Rijeka, then from Grobnik, Vinodol and the island of Krk. The development of the collection is expected in the strategy of new archaeological research in the area of the Croatian Littoral and the systematic research of Early Christian archaeological heritage in the Kvarner region. With the aim of preserving the material appropriate preventive measures of protection have been undertaken and in line with the priority of conservation-restoration requirements.
The properties of the cultural asset of the Antiquity Collection are contained in the material testimonies of the continual processes of the development of individual proto-urban and peregrine centres during Antiquity, especially Late Antiquity and Early Byzantine eras towards the period of the Early Middle Ages.
